Dolly There were no big orchestras at Church or Chapel, just the piano or the organ. But we got to hear and learn all the latest tunes. Try some of them out.

James Murray
We learned to sing the latest Christmas Carols ... like Away in a Manger.  There were two tunes to this Carol ... one was written by James Murray in 1887 and the one which you probably know best by William Kirkpatrick in 1895.  You can hear their tune by clicking their picture.

John Newton Aunt Violet's favourite hymn is Amazing Grace. The words were written by John Newton ( who used to be a slave trader ) and the music was written by James P. Carrell and David S. Clayton in 1831.

Sir Arthur Sullivan In 1871 Sir Arthur Sullivan wrote a tune to go with Onward Christian Soldiers. The words were written by the Rev Sabine Baring Gould for the children of Horbury Bridge, near Wakefield, to sing whilst walking up Quarry Hill to St Peter's Church in Horbury.

Every Whit-Monday our Sunday School would march to the next village singing this very song. It was great fun. We marched along just like real soldiers.
