In 1939 music and dancing was very popular. On Saturday night you went dancing ... usually at the Church Hall, dancing to records or a small three piece band. Listen to some of the tunes which kept my 'spirits high' during the war.  Wait for one or two to start  ... (they start eventually). The Great Glen Miller

'Big Bands' were very popular. Perhaps the most famous war time Big Band came from America and was led by the great Glenn Miller.
Here are two of his biggest 'hits' ....

                 The romantic Moonlight Serenade
and the swinging Chatanooga Choo Choo

A line of Music

Chesney Allen & Bud Flanagan

People managed to keep smiling and laughing.  Groups such as the Crazy Gang were always ready to lift the wartime gloom.
Bud Flanagan and Chesney Allen came up with the simple, but silly ..

Run Rabbit Run
Bud Flanagan always used to appear on stage wearing a large fur coat
Another line of music

Arthur Lowe as Captain Mainwaring

Bud Flanagan also wrote

Who Do You Think You are Kidding Mr Hitler

He didn't write it until well after the war was over, but if he had written it in the 1940's I'm sure it would have been VERY popular.

Al Bowlly

Al Bowlly was a CROONER. That's a man with a smooth silky voice. A voice like that was needed for a song like ....

                              Goodnight Sweetheart

'Sweethearts ', many miles apart always felt most lonely just at the end of the day.

George Formby

It wasn't fun being in the forces. There was a danger that the bullet would be just for you.   Nevertheless soldiers still had the spirit for a bit of fun!  George Formby made this song famous.
