In 1941 my school in Sunderland was closed because of the threat of air raids

I waited with about 200 children aged between 4 and 14 on a local railway station.

We all had our gasmasks in brown cardboard boxes slung over our shoulders and each carried a pillowcase with our clothing. ( We didn't have much )

We were then loaded on small buses and lorries and taken to different places.

I was lucky to be taken in by a wonderful couple who always made me feel at home.

I returned home to my friends who were also coming back from their war time homes.
